My Choice: : Nefta Football Club (Yves Piat and Damien Megherbi)

Runners-up: Brotherhood (Meryam Joobeur and Maria Gracia Turgeon), The Neighbors' Window (Marshall Curry), A Sister (Delphine Girard)

As the only English-language short nomination this year, The Neighbors' Window defies the language barrier poised by the other nominees to more effectively access Academy voters. As the shorts categories have notoriously been plagued by a lack of voter viewership in past years, this language factor may unfortunately be the main selling point for a victory in this category. If this voter bias is not the case, Brotherhood may win for its contemplative look at an estranged son's relationship with his father after returning home from war with a new wife.

While I do acknowledge The Neighbors' Window as an insightful film in this category on the issue of sex and marriage, the most creative and original film of the nominees is Nefta Football Club, which depicts the adventures of two young brothers who find a drug-packing, head-phone-wearing donkey in the desert and decide to take it home to their family, unknowingly igniting a feud with local drug lords.
